Cajamarca

Known to have very elegant architecture and Incan remains, Cajamarca lies on the Cajamarca River, 370 miles NW of Lima. It lies partly in the Andean Highlands and partly in the Marañon River Valley. The Incan emperor, Atahualpa, was captured and executed here in 1532 by Spanish conquistador, Francisco Pizarro. Los Baños del Inca, Atahualpa’s favorite thermal waters, are only a few miles away and are still open to visitors.
